Court has to decide Dimapur case rape or not.
GUWAHATI: On Wednesday Nagaland government was strongly condemned what it termed a ‘misinformation campaign’ on news channels and internet regarding the Dimapur mob execute incident.
Media reports quoting Union home ministry sources claimed that the report from the Nagaland government to MHA said the deceased, Syed Farid Khan, did not rape the Naga woman and that sex between them was consensual.
Nagaland chief minister TR Zeliang told TOI that the Nagaland government’s report submitted to the ministry of home affairs has been misquoted by the media. “After seeing the reports in the media, the Nagaland government checked with the MHA which said it has never mentioned this to the media,” he said.
Zeliang told TOI “A case of alleged rape has been registered. An SIT has been constituted and investigation is on after which police will submit a report in court. It is for the court to give the final verdict whether there was a rape or not,”
A Nagaland government statement in Kohima said the government has already constituted a one-man judicial inquiry to probe into the incident and the commission has been given 45 days to complete the probe and submit its report.
The government has also taken a strong note against the media for spreading false information claiming that there was no rape of the victim. It said preliminary medical reports say the victim was raped. Prima facie evidence shows the victim had some bruises on her body. For a forensic test, the government has sent the samples to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Guwahati. The medical report is yet to be received.
The Nagaland government is also contemplating defamation cases if the media continues to file wrong reports. It has questioned the media and asked it to be factual in reporting such sensitive matters. “This has become an international issue where the Nagaland has been portrayed in bad light,” it said.
Sources said Nagaland Police will now question newsmen visiting Dimapur for filing news reports on the incident. The journalists will be asked from where they got information from ‘sources’ when the government has already detailed many officers to give all information regarding the case to newsmen.
